Fitting Day, And Why We Tie The Pleats

We arrive with sheets down and the track set out first. Every track is levelled across its full length rather than measured down from the ceiling, because ceiling lines in new builds are rarely as flat as they look. The curtains only go up once the track runs clean from end to end.

Then we dress the curtain. That means setting every fold by hand from the heading down to the hem and tying the folds loosely with tape. It is the step that decides how the curtain looks for the next ten years, and it is the one most often skipped on a rushed installation.

Leave the ties on for two to three days before opening them. The folds set into the fabric and the curtain stacks the same way every time after that. Untie too early and the drops never quite hang straight, which shows most on sheers.

Before, if you can manage it. Measure at handover and fit during your moving week. An empty room is quicker to work in, there is nothing to protect from drilling dust, and you avoid living with bare windows while you wait for fabric to arrive.

Blinds in both. A roller sits inside the reveal, clears the worktop and wipes clean, whereas a curtain over a kitchen window collects cooking residue and needs washing far more often. Keep curtains for the rooms you actually sit in.

Work from the floor tile and the kitchen finish, because those are already fixed. Take samples home and check them on the wall in daylight and under your own lighting at night. We leave samples with you rather than asking you to decide during the visit.

That is called dressing. The folds are set by hand and tied so the fabric learns the shape it should hold. Leave the ties on for two or three days and the curtain will stack evenly for years. Opening them the first evening is the most common way to spoil a new set.
